Canada are the 2026 World Schools debating champions. They beat defending champions India in the Grand Final of the World Schools Debating Championships in Nairobi on 24 July, closing a tournament that brought more than 70 national teams to Kenya for the competition’s first visit to East Africa. Hong Kong 打入 elimination rounds, breaking 18th of 32 teams, with three Capstone debaters in the national squad.
World championship in Nairobi
WSDC 2026 ran from 14 to 24 July in Nairobi, hosting more than 700 debaters, coaches and adjudicators. It was the first World Schools Debating Championships held in Africa since Cape Town in 2012, and the first ever staged in East Africa.
Teams debated eight preliminary rounds, a mix of prepared motions released in advance and impromptu motions prepared in one hour with no coaches and no internet. With a field of that size, the tournament broke 32 teams into a partial double-octofinal, meaning a team needed a strong record simply to reach the knockout stage.
Sri Lanka topped the preliminary standings on seven wins, ahead of the USA, Singapore and the Republic of Korea.
Canada beat India in the Grand Final
The Grand Final was judged by a nine-adjudicator panel, with India proposing and Canada opposing. Canada took the decision and the title.
India came into the round as the reigning champions, having won in Panama City in 2025, and were attempting to become the first team to defend the title since Australia’s run in the mid-2000s. Both finalists came through difficult halves of the draw: Canada beat Pakistan in one semifinal, while India beat hosts Kenya in the other.

The host nation’s run
The story of the week belonged to Kenya. The hosts broke 22nd, near the bottom of the qualifying field, and then won three consecutive elimination rounds to reach the semifinals, going out only to the defending champions.
For a championship returning to the continent after fourteen years, a host-nation semifinal is about as good an argument for taking the tournament to new regions as the format could have produced.
Hong Kong’s tournament
Hong Kong broke 18th of 32, finishing the preliminary rounds on five wins and 14 adjudicator ballots, with an average team speaker score of 252.85. They met Ireland in the double-octofinals and went out there.
Qualifying for the elimination rounds at a championship of this size is a great result. Congratulations to Mollie M., Jimi F., Moses L., Jasmine C. and David H. for carrying the region’s pride.
Hong Kong arrived as a former world champion nation, having won the title in 2022 and finished runners-up in 2021, and the 2026 squad kept the country in the knockout stage against a field of more than seventy delegations.
Three Capstone students were part of the Hong Kong squad in Nairobi: Mollie M., Jimi F. and Moses L.
Jimi and Moses were also part of the Capstone team that won the Hong Kong Debate Open earlier in 2026, where Moses took the Finals Best Speaker award. Jimi F. and Mollie M. were also a part of the Capstone team that won Beijing International Schools Debating Championship (BJISDC) 2025, where Mollie M. took home the best speaker award for the competition.
Canada’s fifth title in context
Nairobi was Canada’s fifth world title, after 1988, 2010, 2020 and 2021. There is a neat symmetry to it: Canada also won the very first World Schools Debating Championships, held in Canberra in 1988, beating Australia in that Grand Final.
Australia remain the most successful nation in the championship’s history with nine titles, most of them in a dominant stretch between 1997 and 2006. Canada, England and Scotland have five each. Hong Kong’s 2022 championship makes it one of only eleven nations to have won the tournament at all.
