What students do in class

PSD I introduces the foundations of public speaking and debate. Students discuss issues that are relevant to their age, decide what they think and learn to explain why. Coaches teach them how to open a speech clearly, support each point with reasons and examples, conclude with purpose and respond thoughtfully to a different view.

What they’ll learn

  • Open a speech clearly and conclude with purpose
  • Support an opinion with reasons and examples
  • Organise ideas into a persuasive structure
  • Respond to another person’s argument
  • Present with greater confidence and control

How students progress

Students gain a reliable foundation in structured speaking and become ready for the more demanding debate work in PSD II.

Who this program suits

Students in Grades 3–4 who are new to debate or need stronger foundations before moving into competitive formats.
