What students do in class

PSD I for Grades 5–6 establishes the reasoning and communication skills older primary students need before taking on competitive debate. Students explore current issues, distinguish an assertion from a supported argument and learn to organise a speech that is easy to follow.

What they’ll learn

  • Analyse a motion and identify the main question
  • Choose relevant reasons and examples
  • Structure a persuasive speech
  • Listen for weaknesses in another argument
  • Respond calmly and clearly

How students progress

Students learn to build and deliver a complete argument. Once the core skills are consistent, they can progress to Grades 5–6 PSD II.

Who this program suits

Students in Grades 5–6 who are new to formal debate or who need to consolidate their foundations at the older primary level.
